Milford Youth Attend Leadership Summit in Milwaukee

Wednesday, August 3, 2011

On July 28th, four Milford youth and their chaperones set out for Milwaukee, WI. Their destination was Marquette University, site of the 2011 Youth Venture Summit, an event that brings together youth from all across the United States to share their experiences with improving communities.

Melissa Braza, Sabrina Flores, Mina Shehata and Jacob Eosco are participants of the United Way Youth Venture program, a youth leadership program at the United Way of Tri-County that guides and supports youth as they create and launch their own community benefitting ventures.

Over the past 8 months this group has worked with their peers at the Milford Youth Center to create the “Find Yourself Fridays” team. The group has hosted monthly events at the youth center to provide kids with a fun and safe environment. The “Find Yourself Fridays” events have also raised funds to support Cell Phones for Soldiers, a local homeless shelter, Best Buddies and other important causes.

During their trip to Milwaukee the group heard from inspirational keynote speakers, attended youth-facilitated workshops and participated in abstract thinking exercises to teach them to use their creativity to help their communities.

The “Find Yourself Fridays” team received a seed grant for $1,000 from the United Way of Tri-County to start their program in November of 2010. Due to their success and enthusiasm, the group received an additional United Way grant to support their trip to Milwaukee.
